Top 10 Over Used Political Catch Phrases of 2009

While watching the 24 hour news cycle yesterday it occurred to Politacks that every time a politician uses a catch phrase our blood starts to boil. We can’t explain it but there is something about these little one or two word combinations grind on our last nerve. It reminds us of when someone is loosing an argument the resort to name calling.

A perfect example was demonstrated last Fall during the elections. When anyone came out against President Obama’s positions they were quickly dismissed as having racist tendencies and called a ‘Racist’. That seemed to work for some time but the real question is whether or not these phrases actually work over the long term or do they turn people off as soon as they hear them?

Politacks has compiled a top 10 list of our ‘Over Used Political Phrases of 2009’. Feel free to add yours.

Which Poll to follow? Easy. The one that gives you the results you seek.

Polls have always been a way for partisans to provide evidence that they are “On the side of the people”. But how does a political operative choose which poll to use? That’s easy. Choose the poll that fits your political agenda. The funny thing is one week Gallup may be your source for inspiration and the next week they can be goring your ox and you are forced to cite sources that FoxNews may frequent such as Rasmussen Reports.

Today is a an excellent example of partisan cheering for a poll as pointed out on, the  Gallup Daily: Obama Job Approval shows a bump for President Obama:

Gallup Daily: Obama Job Approval

Gallup Daily: Obama Job Approval

And yet another source tells an entirely different story as seen here on Rasmussen Reports Daily Presidential Tracking Poll:

Rasmussen Reports: Daily Presidential Tracking Poll

Rasmussen Reports: Daily Presidential Tracking Poll

The undeniable storyline though, is that Obama’s approval ratings are heading back up or down depending on whom you choose to cite. An excellent example of this turning into feigned outrage is when mocks those citing Gallop as seen on MSNBC. In a posting back on Oct 17 2008 the feigned outrage roared when posted: “Selectively citing Gallup poll’s findings, Morning Joe joined Drudge Report in touting “Gallup shock”.

The clips taken from an MSNBC segment show that choosing a poll is easy, just make sure they are the facts as you want to see it.

NOTE: If you are running a blog or site and want to run a poll try Google Docs for Live Polls. See video here from .

Dems weary of people actually being able to have time to read a bill. Feigned outrage?

Last night on Fox News, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) complained about the process of moving bills forward for a vote. “I’m going to introduce a resolution here in the House that would require all committees to post within 24 hours the actions taken by their committee,” he declared. Bachmann and Olberman agree? Both outraged. News at 11.

Rep. Michele Bachmann Says MSNBC Hosts Are ‘Stalkers,’ Olberman demands apology.

Fact Checking Spoofers on SNL…only if your ox is being gored.

CNN the old bellwether of cable news has pulled out all the stops in investigative journalism this week. Thankfully they set their sites on NBC Saturday Night Live skit where an actor, playing President Obama, admits to breaking several campaign promises after nearly a year in office.

Wolf Blitzer in a failed attempt to out msnbc even MSNBC, trip overs himself to apologize for the administration or to shout “not fair” or claim “racism” at every turn.

Ahh… I love the smell of feigned outrage in the morning.
